Erectile dysfunction, also known as impotence, is the inability to develop or maintain an erection of the penis for satisfactory sexual intercourse regardless of the capability of ejaculation. There are various underlying causes, many of which are medically reversible.

Due to its personal nature, the subject has been taboo for a long period of time, and is the stuff of many urban legends. Since the 1930s, folk remedies have been advertised widely for the condition. The introduction of sildenafil (Viagra®) in the 1990s caused a second wave of public attention, propelled in part by heavy advertising.

The Latin term impotentia coeundi describes simple inability to insert the penis into the vagina. It is now mostly replaced by more precise terms.

Medical symptoms

Erectile dysfunction is characterized by the inability to maintain erection. Normal erections during sleep and in the early morning suggest a psychogenic cause, while loss of these erections may signify underlying disease, often cardiovascular in origin. Other things leading to erectile dysfunction are diabetes mellitus (causing neuropathy) or hypogonadism (decreased testosterone levels due to disease affecting the testicles or the pituitary gland).

Medical diagnosis

There are no formal tests to diagnose erectile dysfunction. Some blood tests are generally done to exclude underlying disease, such as diabetes, hypogonadism and prolactinoma.

...

Pathophysiology

Penile erection is managed by two different mechanisms. The first one is the reflex erection, which is achieved by directly touching the penile shaft. The second is the psychogenic erection, which is achieved by erotic stimuli. The former uses the peripheral nerves and the lower parts of the spinal cord, whereas the latter uses the limbic system of the brain. In both conditions an intact neural system is required for a successful and complete erection. Stimulation of penile shaft by the nervous system leads to the secretion of nitric oxide (NO), which causes the relaxation of smooth muscles of corpora cavernosa (the main erectile tissue of penis), and subsequently penile erection. Additionally, adequate levels of testosterone (produced by the testes) and an intact pituitary gland are required for the development of a healthy male erectile system. As can be understood from the mechanisms of a normal erection, impotence may develop due to hormonal deficiency, disorders of the neural system, lack of adequate penile blood supply or psychological problems.

A few causes of impotence may be iatrogenic (medically caused). Various antihypertensive (medications intended to control high blood pressure) and some drugs that modify central nervous system response may inhibit erection by denying blood supply or by altering nerve activity. Surgical intervention for a number of different conditions may remove anatomical structures necessary to erection, damage nerves, or impair blood supply.

You really shouldn't let yourself get too concerned about this. There is a very good chance that the condition from which you are suffering is stress related, so worrying about it is probably not going to assist you. As the previous poster mentioned in his reply, there are medications that can be taken to assist you with errection.

If you do choose to go the medical route (I would speak to your doctor again) I suggest that you look for one of the generic drugs that treat erectile disfunction rather than Viagra.

Viagra will be more expensive in most cases.

I did a little look around the web and have seen that Sildenafil seems to come in 25mg or 50mg strengths so once again I suggest you speak to your doctor and seek advice as to whether or not this is a suitable treatment for you.

Here is some more reading from the site I found which speaks about possible side-effects.

SILDENAFIL (Generic Viagra ®) is a medication used to treat erectile dysfunction (impotence). Sildenafil works by relaxing the smooth muscles of the penis, creating an increase in blood flow which produces an erection. This medication works through a chain reaction of chemical occurrences. It releases nitric oxide in the corpus cavernosum (a sponge-like area of erectile tissue where most of the blood is during erection), which triggers an increase in the enzyme guanylate cyclase, which in turn increases cyclic guanosine monophosphate, thus producing relaxation of the muscles in the penis. This medication is only taken when an erection is desired, it is not a daily treatment regimen. This medication should not be taken more than once a day.

How to take Sildenafil (Generic Viagra ®):

Take Sildenafil tablets orally with a full glass of water. This medication is usually taken one hour prior to sexual activity. Avoid grapefruit while taking Sildenafil to avoid adverse drug interference.

Common possible side effects:

headache
flushing
dizziness
indigestion
nasal congestion
vision changes (including color vision)
diarrhea
Seek medical attention or advice if you experience the following:

chest pain
difficulty breathing
shortness of breath
heart palpitations
severe headache
severe flushing
severe dizziness
severe indigestion
severe vision changes
numbness or tingling in chest, arms, neck or jaw
swollen ankles or legs
rash
erection that lasts longer than four hours
*Prolonged erection may damage the penis and requires medical attention. Eating a high fat meal prior to taking this medication may lengthen the time it takes to produce an erection.

Good luck

Hi peter,

I think you are taking this problem very seriously. This problem would have been serious if you would have been suffering from Diabetes or heart problems.
The factors which contribute to diabetes are also responsible for Impotence .The various factors which are responsible for diabetes and impotence are: lack of exercise, smoking, alcohol and high blood pressure. A healthier lifestyle should be adopted by people in order to reduce the risk of developing diabetes and impotence. The key for not getting affected by all these things is the healthy lifestyle.

So to more read about this problem you can read more about this on (http://www.cialismagic.com).
There are some more articles and releavant information which will be helpful for you. Dont get so much tensed.

You will get some solution out of this forum.

Yeah, I know. I kind of sensed that this is another marketing scheme, but I posted an honest and relevant reply. But now, this person(or group of people) creates this conversation and markets websites and products. Well, ... a little more creative than just posting same message all over the internet ...

lol! I've been noticing more and more of this round the web over the past while!
Kinda sad - makes me feel as though my reply to such a post rather meaningless, since the poster wasn't actually asking a legit question, but rather setting himself up for his advert! Twisted Evil
