Post subject: Mental health and influence of religion: Christianity
We briefly discussed correlation between mental health and religion. What's your thought on the correlation between mental health and Christianity? Also have you read Da Vinci Code? Given interesting interpretation of Christianity suggested in Da Vinci Code, what's your take on Christianity and its influence on spirituality and mental health?

Well, ito christianity, let's see...
You've got people believing in:
1) Ghosts
2) Virgins giving birth
3) A supreme creator occupying a burning bush
4) All kinds of imaginary beasts
5) Invisible places like heaven and hell that nobody has ever seen.
6) ...
The list could go on... and on... and on!
I do believe that the above are delusions?

Seem to be so, though I'm not 100% sure if "delusion" is construed to be politically correct today.

I suppose so. One has to have faith to believe in something that one cannot touch, see, feel nor prove the existence of.
So why aren't people allowed to believe that they are Napoleon then?
Or even Jesus? Of course, all christians would just think the guy' (or gal) is nuts, but yet they believe that he did come, and will come again. Mind you, they've set out some really strict rules for him to abide by if he did decide to pitch up one day. I mean, he certainly wouldn't have a will of his own at all - the christians have set out a strict script for him to follow to the step, as is outlined in that book that the Council of Nicaea compiled.
But I suppose if enough people swallow it, then it's not a delusion anymore but a faith, yes. .

This is why religions should not influence politics (in principle). Separation of church and state.
If having faith can improve your health, that's great. In fact, it seems that this can be proven scientifically. However, this should not influence politics (in principle).

I definitely agree with that! But isn't international policies generally somewhat racist and looking down on other religions?

Do you think this has a hand in the rise in terrorism we're seeing?

Well, the item top on the list during war time is propaganda, so yes, we hear about this quite often.

I'm still wondering how they could even attempt to sell to the public the story that they were invading Iraq as a part of their war on terrorism. Considering that the 911 bombers trained in the US on simulators, one would've rather have expected Bush to bomb the US!
Are you worried about the Iran issue? I somehow have the feeling we're busy seeing world war three unfolding!

We can only wish that no action would be taken for the next 3 years.

I'm pretty worried this whole thing looks like it's becoming a christian vs. muslim thing. How long until the good US citizens vote the new president in?

This is why I said "You need to wait for 3 years." President Bush will stay until the end of 2008. It is highly unlikely that he will be removed from the office or resign.
