It is said that lunch should be a modest meal. But exactly what should you eat for breakfast?

But do you always need breakfast? And do you always need lunch?
I listen to my body rather than listen to culture... Wink Sometimes I feel like eggs for breakfast, sometimes cereal. I never bother with both at the same time.
Lunch can be a bit, or it can be a meal, though if I choose a sizeable meal, then I'll only feel like a snack later the evening.

I suspect that the human body really requires a lot less than we think!

If you work at the office, you can work ok without having breakfast. If your work is physically demanding, having good breakfast is a must.

With regard to recent trend of putting emphasis on breakfast, if you have light breakfast and heavy dinner, you are more likely to gain weight. This depends on a lot of things though. As you know, so many Americans have severe weight problem(s), and this is probably a reflection of that in part.

Funny you should say that. The years I worked hands-on in the building industry I skipped breakfast, and would often have a huge lunch, followed by a half-hour nap, and then a moderate supper (even if going to work a double/triple)

I suppose in the morning I was running on the previous night's carbo's, and topped up with various "fuels" lunchtime, etc...

Never gained weight though. I suppose it came down to how strenuous the work was coupled with the total amount eaten for the day. Perhaps I automatically had the balance right without even realizing it?

It is often said that construction workers acquire healthy eating habits.

Probably just vary the diet with how the days' work have been going. Perhaps.

I'm the same, and never let my mental processes affect that. (Although they have been known to)

our culture has it reversed and everyone eats a huge dinner, when in reality the bigger meals should be breakfast and then lunch, with a sensibly but small dinner.

Yup, that's the best option.

In Portugal, they just eat and eat. They start dinner late, around 10pm and have a really heavy meal. They drink a lot too, but then they have a lot of fun. I'm not much of a heavy eater myself, although as a teen I did eat a lot, but never put on weight. I've always been slim, and tall and the opposite looking to a supposedly 'typical' portuguese person.
