I don't know about this particular suggestion, but I do think it's a good idea to give incentive to tax payers. So, for example, you join in the gym and you go there 3 times a week. You work out for 1 hour or so. You get some kind of proof from the gym, and if you submit it, you get tax deduction. Something like that. |

Where I work they do pay you to lose weight and pay you a certain amount to keep it off. It is only up to around 200 or 300 dollars. But it does modivate you. |

That's very interesting. My last employer paid me most of gym membership fee, but I never got paid for maintaining my weight. Does this mean that many people are over weight at your work? |

It's a sign of the times when employers are spending money on something that employees themselves should already have concern over.

Aaron Kind of scary, if I think about it. Employer's paying for your gym membership is one thing, but employer's paying you for losing weight is another. |

A spoon of castor oil before any snack might well do the trick in encouraging people to avoid snacks, in particular children - who nowadays don't evn know what castor oil is!!! |

Castor oil is a vegetable oil obtained from the castor bean (or preferably castor seed as the castor plant (Ricinus communis) is not a member of the bean family).

My employer makes a real effort to encourage exercise. They offer a gym membership as well as paying for some exercise equipment for the home |

After you work for 40 hours or so a week, your productivity goes down dramatically. Also you tend to make mistakes as your productivity goes down. This is actually counter-productive. |

Goes to show how some employers need to catch up to this modern way of thinking! |

For example, what if we said to everyone "you must walk or run a total of at least 5 miles a week" or you pay an additional $1000 a year in taxes". Sounds rather draconian, I know, but could it be a good idea? We all know the importance of having a healthy workforce. Could something like this work? Aaron Regardless of what you think about taxation ideologically, taxation generally suppresses its subject. If tobacco is taxed heavily, people use less tobacco products. If gas is taxed heavily, people drive less. However, I'm not so sure if taxation can encourage people to do its subject. For example, can taxation encourage people to exercise? I'm not so sure. |
