Can exercise be made mandatory...?

For example, what if we said to everyone "you must walk or run a total of at least 5 miles a week" or you pay an additional $1000 a year in taxes".

Sounds rather draconian, I know, but could it be a good idea?

We all know the importance of having a healthy workforce. Could something like this work?

I don't know about this particular suggestion, but I do think it's a good idea to give incentive to tax payers. So, for example, you join in the gym and you go there 3 times a week. You work out for 1 hour or so. You get some kind of proof from the gym, and if you submit it, you get tax deduction. Something like that.

Where I work they do pay you to lose weight and pay you a certain amount to keep it off. It is only up to around 200 or 300 dollars. But it does modivate you.

That's very interesting. My last employer paid me most of gym membership fee, but I never got paid for maintaining my weight.

Does this mean that many people are over weight at your work?

It's a sign of the times when employers are spending money on something that employees themselves should already have concern over.

Kind of scary, if I think about it. Employer's paying for your gym membership is one thing, but employer's paying you for losing weight is another.

A spoon of castor oil before any snack might well do the trick in encouraging people to avoid snacks, in particular children - who nowadays don't evn know what castor oil is!!! Wink

Castor oil is a vegetable oil obtained from the castor bean (or preferably castor seed as the castor plant (Ricinus communis) is not a member of the bean family).

Castor oil is extremely versatile and unique in its composition, maintaining its fluidity at both extremely high and low temperatures. Castor oil consists of 90 % unsaturated C:18 ricinoleic fatty acid. It is also a major source of sebacic acid.

Castor oil and its derivatives have applications in the manufacturing of soaps, lubricants, hydraulic and brake fluids, paints, dyes, coatings, inks, cold resistant plastics, waxes and polishes, nylon, pharmaceuticals and perfumes. Highly refined and dried Castor oil is also used as a dielectric fluid in some high voltage capacitors.

The poison ricin is made from the byproducts in the manufacture of castor oil.

About 1 % of global castor oil production goes into medical or health store products. It is used to ease constipation and as an emetic to induce vomiting. Consumption of large amounts of castor oil (below lethal doses, such as one bottle) can induce labor in near-term pregnant women. It is notorious for its strong taste, which was for many years a standard gag in comic strips, animated cartoons, and The Little Rascals / Our Gang short films. Castor Oyl, Olive's brother in the comic strip Thimble Theatre was named for it.

Medicinal Uses of Castor Oil

Castor oil seems to heal joint pains, stimulate and cleanse the lymphatic system, and thereby build immunity. Oil bath using castor oil is a traditional practice in southern parts of India. Since it has a detoxifying effect on the body at a negligible cost, it is a commoners health aid.

Castor oil as a tool of political terror

In Fascist Italy under the regime of Benito Mussolini, castor oil was one of the tools of the blackshirts. Political dissidents were force-fed large quantities of castor oil by Fascist paramilitary groups. This technique was said to have been originated by Gabriele D'Annunzio. Victims of this treatment would experience severe diarrhea and dehydration, often resulting in death.

Sometimes when the blackshirts wished to make sure that the victim would die rather than simply be badly disabled, they would mix gasoline with the castor oil.

It is said that Mussolini's power was backed by "the bludgeon and castor oil."

My employer makes a real effort to encourage exercise. They offer a gym membership as well as paying for some exercise equipment for the home

That's very nice of them! Sure beats the extra exercise offered by some employers as in "why not stay longer & do more work?" Shocked

After you work for 40 hours or so a week, your productivity goes down dramatically. Also you tend to make mistakes as your productivity goes down. This is actually counter-productive.

Goes to show how some employers need to catch up to this modern way of thinking!

Regardless of what you think about taxation ideologically, taxation generally suppresses its subject. If tobacco is taxed heavily, people use less tobacco products. If gas is taxed heavily, people drive less. However, I'm not so sure if taxation can encourage people to do its subject. For example, can taxation encourage people to exercise? I'm not so sure.
