Post subject: Lack of sleep makes you fat and stupid
A lack of sleep makes you "fat, stupid and sick", according to German scientists.
Sleep researcher Professor Juergen Zulley from the Regensburg University Hospital in Bavaria said: "It makes you stupid because suffering from sleep deficiency diminishes your memory. Sick, because too little sleep can damage your heart, circulation, stomach and intestines. And fat because while we are sleeping are bodies release a hormone that reduces appetite.
"If the release of this hormone is interrupted because we are not getting a full night's sleep then we quickly feel hungry which causes most people to head straight to the fridge," he said.
He added in order to stay fit and healthy people should regularly have seven hours sleep a night.

That makes sense to me. I know a lot of people who brag about how little sleep that they need any night. They are also some of the most pale sickly people that I know
If you talk to any trainer they will tell you that one of the most important things if you want to loss fat or gain muscle is to sleep 8 hours a night

I slept 7 and a half last night. I usually get by on around that, but really I'd sooner have 8.

It was like 8 last night. Maybe less. I was pleased to have finished reading a book.

Do you ever really feel the need to catch up on sleep and have something like 12 hours in just one night? I certainly used to but nowadays I don't really get the opportunity to catch up like that.

Yes, I feel like it occasionally. It's weird. It probably doesn't make difference scientifically, but it feels like it does.

I'm not sure. I think it probably does make sense scientifically. It's kind of your body's way of saying to you that you need to catch up on rest.

7 hours sounds good. When I get a small amount of sleep for too many nights in a row, I feel depressed, & really mean.

I got about 11 last night... never even got online!
Work was too hectic physically, so I just konked out early.
Ideally, I'd like 8 hours a night, but most nights only get around 6.

And I can't fall asleep on my own, most of the time, I have to have sleeping aid. And I know that's no good for my circadian rhythms....

But what actually happens when you sleep? Doesn't your body repair itself & build tissue & produce fat?
I would actually have thought that one would burn more energy being awake, and hence be less likely to gain weight?

If I don't get good sleep (not necessarily long sleep), I'm not very sharp.

I initially thought that there is a correlation, and then I thought about this again and came to conclude that there really isn't any correlation. If there is actually a correlation, so many people would readjust their sleep to lose weight, wouldn't they?
