Should running on roads be avoided if you've previously suffered from a slipped disc?

Well, you should always hear from doctors and certified physical therapists, but here's my answer. Road running is a great exercise, but if you have/had a physical problem like knee problem, pack pain, etc., it can do some harm; it can put pressure on an area which you have or you had a problem. Swimming is generally recommended because you really don't put any pressure on any part of your body. |

Any exercise, including swimming, could put further stress on your back.

So why is swimming so often a recommended exercise? |

I think this is good exercise except if you have no any problems in your joints.
