I think it's widely recognised that possibly some exercises are better for us than others.

Swimming is supposed to be good for all-round exercise.

Long distance running can be good for CV workouts, but can be wearing on joints.

What exercises do you think are best and worst for the human body?

yes, the best could be swimming, because it exposes all the muscles in the same time. You just have to:
1. know how to swim properly, to take the best effect
2. have a long swimming pool

I'd like to swim every day, but I am too lazy to go to a swimming pool. And I do not know how to squeeze the olympic pool into my flat.

I don't think that weight lifting is particularly healthy; it tends to force you to use only certain parts of your body. Some may argue that, if it's done properly, it's a good exercise, but ... that can be a bit tricky. Also even if it's done properly, you ought to do other exercises.

How about one of those small pools that gives you a current to swim against?

Oh, I think that I'll go crazy in those pools if you can call them pools ...

OK, well you'd best get yourself an Olympic sized one then.

Or just get a place near the lake or ocean. I can also share a public pool with all the common people ...

Public swimming pool...?? Ugh, that sounds ghastly. You need to get your own rather than have to share with any common folk.

sure, everybody should have his/her own swimming pool. no sharing! Or at least a piece of beach with his/her very own sea.

My goodness, I guess that I'm the only commoner here ...

Yes, a beach is good, so long as you don't have to share it. But for those slightly cooler days, you need to have your own indoor pool.

Public swimming pool indeed.

you don't need to have it as long as you live in Caribbean. If you should have your own beach, than only in a place like that

running/cycling/treadmill is excellent for weight loss

lifting weights you will tone/grow all the interested muscles, naturally if done properly this should include all the muscles

lifting heavy weights, hence less repetitions, will help you grow muscles, instead a major number of repetitions with lighter weigths will count even as cardio activity

I spent over 10 years running large health club chains in NYC and Washington DC. I was certified with 2 different training certifications. And through it all the info is the same.
Water aerobic activity is great for you because of the less stress on the body and high cardio value, but ultimately everyone needs to exercise THEIR HEART more then anything else. That is cardio (walking, running, bike, etc). The problem is that many people work out, but not at the right heart rate for any sustained period of time. So they sweat and think they are doing something, but their heart rate never gets into the proper levels for wieght loss or cardio benefits. Remember, it does not make a difference if you look like a fitness model and are all ripped - if you die when you are 40 years old. Most people exercise for EGO and how they look, when they should be concerned with their heart rate, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, etc.
And diet, don't get me started. 99% of people work out..and then ruin it all when they eat wrong right after.

Could you please explain your rhetoric a bit further here? How does an exercise like the squat or the deadlift only use one part of your body? These exercises use a lot of different muscles!

So, are we to believe that the usefulness of an exercise is in direct correlation with how much of your body is being used? Is running unhealthier than other activities because I could be using more of my body?
