There is a pretty big difference in taste actually. Lamb has a much softer taste. Mutton is a robust meat; it also has a distinct smell.

I'm not saying you can't buy mutton here, but you generally just don't see it for sale.

Farmers here will keep older sheep for their wool, or for breeding, and tend not to sell them for their meat.

I’m guessing that mutton is pretty popular around here because that’s about the only red meat you can get.
