Post subject: Getting rid of your gut
What's the best way to reduce your gut?
I am probably carrying about a stone more than I perhaps should, and I feel as though most of it is on my waistline. What can I do? Sit-ups...? Anything else that's more interesting?
I enjoy running and playing football (soccer)...

You can't spot reduce fat in certain areas, so the best way to get rid of your gut would be to simply lose body fat.
Simply?! Well, on paper it is, at least...

I always carry a little extra weight around the mid section also. It is very hard, especially as you get older and your metabolism slows down.

Start weight training.
The great thing about muscle is that it burns more than fat and increases your metabolism. Running is good, but if you really want to get rid of the gut hit the weights. Use a circuit training method to keep your heart rate up over the entire workout and use compound movements that will target a larger number of muscle groups.

I've had 'flu this past few days. That seems to have helped with the weight loss a little!

You will not get rid of the gut by doing sit-ups. If anything it will get bigger, a lot stronger, but bigger
Sit-ups don't burn a lot of calories.....The running on the other hand is a big help

Not entirely true. Your metabolism will only slow down, if you allow your brain to. It's an aging reactive, which means if you believe in age, your likely to slow down yourself(body). I know 80 year olds who run for miles everyday, and are the fittest now, than when they were young adults.
As someone said, it's about loosing the fat. If your really set on doing so, it's probably wise to stick yourself on a regulated diet and forms of exercise which will reduce the intake of stimulation, at the same time build up on your muscles through training, as another user pointed out.

right, but there is no denying that for the majority of the world, as you get older it is harder to burn or lose the weight, no matter what you do. But yes, with hard work you can still make gains

Maybe no denying for you. For many, they can easily rid of it. It just depends on the person.
