More than 50 percent of Chinese men over 40 suffer from varying degrees of impotence and most delay seeking treatment because they are too embarrassed, according to this article. 50% sounds awfully high to me, but if this is right, is Pfizer seeing a great potential in China?

With China's population of well over a billion people, a study on 1000 men seems a little...unrealistic.

Could http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=oddlyEnoughNews&storyID=6168689 possibly have had anything to do with such a high rate of impotence??

Confused

Being given high benefits for not having children could very well be a psychological factor for not being able to....

Viagra is very popular in US. Is it because the drug is used as a recreational drug more and more or because many men were actually impotent whether it's caused by stress, depression or something else?

I kind of doubt it. People have sex(without using condoms) even if they know that they have chance to get HIV and other STD. I doubt if some benefit will change people's attitude/motivation toward sex.

This is a very small sample, but this may or may not be a good reference when we look at the population where the sample is taken(major cities?).

The type of drug may sell well there, though authentic US Viagra would probably not sell well as it is too expensive.

That does sound remarkably high... could it be related to diet? The Chinese diet is very different to many other parts of the world...

Personally, I believe they have good diet. Chinese food is pretty balanced(I think). ... not quite sure why the number is so high. It intrigues me that the country has the biggest population in the world, on the contrary.

I'm not saying they don't have a good diet... I'm just wondering if there is something in their diet that makes impotency more likely.

A lot of people smoke. Can it be the cause? I thought Europeans smoke a lot even today. I know that smoking in public places is banned in some European countries(Ireland?), but it's only recent, right?

Maybe stress, since the country is going through such dramatic social and economic changes?

I don't know anything about smoking in China... is it particularly bad?

I wouldn't think it'd be down to stress. Although China is going through a lot of change, most Chinese people are probably going about their daily lives much as they always did...
