Post subject: Does an apple a day still keep the doctor away?
I the past they used to say "an apple a day, keeps the doctor away" with recent knowledge we know we need much more that an apple a day, apparently we need to eat at least five portions of fruit a day to make the minimum intake out body requires, its usually extremely difficult for me to eat that much fruit, how can one easily accomplish eating the minimum amount of foot and drinking the required amount of water to stay health. A complete lifestyle change?

This is actually a pretty interesting question, because, if we all want to have this perfect diet, then we have to wonder if we have enough food and water. Water supply is actually a big question. But let's just assume that we can get all these food and water for the time being.
I think you are right. I think we need to change our eating habit pretty dramatically. I guess this is why vitamins are often recommended to supplement; it might be an easier way to have this super healthy diet.

In an ideal world we should get all the vitamins and mineral we need from our food where they occur naturally rather than via supplements. But our very hectic lifestyle this days makes it impossible

I do agree with you, but it is a choice at the end of the day, so it's something we want to think about at least rather than jump into the conclusion that we don't have enough time.

The alkaline/acidic balance of what we eat perhaps also ought to be taken into consideration. The 'apple a day' may be to counteract the huge amount of acid-producing stuff that we eat on a daily basis, including junk food.

Can we substitute apple to some other fruit like orange, kiwi, peach and strawberry? Is it better to stick to one fruit or better to eat them all?

I think this whole thing is an old wives tale.

Starting in 2005, the USDA recommended serving amount for fruits is going to be increased. Yes, it is better to get nutrients from their natural sources, ie. fresh fruits and veggies, than from supplements. Generally speaking, the deeper and more vibrant the color of the fruit, the higher the nutritional value and ant-oxidant properties of the fruit.
An alternative to supplements in pill form, which can prove to be a hassle, would be a great tasting juice that is made from the skin, meat and seeds of a number of beneficial fruits, without the additives and preservatives that come with all of the store bought juices.

I'm afraid I still don't manage to eat five servings of fruit a day, but lately I've taken to drinking apple cider at least once a day. It's got more vitamins then apple juice, plus fiber.

I think this kind of statement, makes people think this is the only way of being healthy. It's a very misleading statement, and one which can be prevented at times. Most of this information is there, to control the population, and is not necessarily true. Each of us are different, and we have different bodies therefore have different diets. We all choose the diets that are best for us at times, either influenced by our surroundings or just because we think its the right thing for us. What we need to understand is more about how our own body works, before feeding it what we think is right, by external sources. We know what tastes good, and what doesn't and sometimes it's not so much the regulation of food that makes us healthy, but understanding how our own body works so we can use a diet which will fit with our own appetites.
