I worked out that this is around 20% of GDP in the US, which brings me to my next question. What are the taxation levels in the US for individuals? In Britain the highest rate of income tax is 40%, but we have many additional taxes on top of this.

35%. (I had a quick answer, because I had a similar discussion in some other forum.)

Right, now this is interesting. In the UK the top rate of tax is 40% yet the government spends around 45% of UK GDP every year, twice as high as the US government. This raises three points for me.

1) The US private sector must be alot more active and important than in the UK

2) I don't personally think the public services offered in the UK are twice as good.

3) As the top rate of tax isn't to different the UK must use alot more additional taxes on top of income tax than the US does.

This is absolutely correct. I leave the discussion about whether this is a good or bad thing, but the private sector pretty much rules the United States of America, and they are much more valued and treasured than in UK (and other EU countries).

I believe so. If I understand correctly, generally speaking, EU countries (maybe all EU countries) tax a lot more than US.
