Post subject: Mental exercises
I guess this is the right forum for this question. Are there any exercises to improve your mental fitness (if there is such a thing) and if so what are they?

Meditation is one. For example, a lot of people today say "I'm so busy." "busy" is nothing but a state of one's mind; you have 24 hours a day, no less, no more. It is not a statement that makes a lot of sense, but a lot of people say this. Getting rid of this mind set actually helps you to become mentally healthier, IMO. Also one of procedures to accomplish this such as medication should be categorized into "exercise."

Does that improve your mental fitness though or is it more spiritual/relaxation?

I do think this improves your mental fitness. I also think that this makes you resilient to many difficulties.

I am also interested in how quickly you can lose "mental fitness". Let's say you work in a profession which is mentally taxing and then you have some time out to travel round the world, have a baby or whatever... how easy it to then return to work and pick up from where you left off?

Good question. I know myself that I have forgotten many of the things I learnt at university because I havn't studied them recently. They're not lost completely but they're hidden away at the back of my brain.

Now, we are talking about number of different aspects of mental fitness. We were talking about mental fitness in terms of ability to cope with stress.

My initial question was quite a broad one, in the same way that physical fitness can cover many different aspects (stamina, strength, speed etc.) so can mental fitness, so any answers are welcome.

Mental fitness can improve greatly with proper training. Mental fitness covers many aspects like physical fitness. Now, like physical fitness, I think mental fitness's certain aspects are critical for us to have healthy life. IMO, the ability to cope with stress is one of those aspects.

Yea, I think so, to a certain extent. I think something like meditation can improve your ability to cope with stress.

Do you think every kind of meditation technique is good enough, or are there special techniques that suite better for people with mental stress.
Do you think there is a risk to worsen the condition if you do meditation without guidance?

I think it's a good mental exercise for everyone. I hate to be pessimistic, but today's environment is not very healthy; TV, radio, so many commercials, people are talking to cell phone 24/7, etc. Not very healthy.

I don't think so.

I have heard stories about people who have seen strange visions or heard strange sounds during meditation and have become more confused or even schizofrenic. Can you share your meditation technique?

I don't have any formal technique. It's more like sitting at a quiet place and not think or do much.

Does this have to do with meditation?
