Post subject: New breast cancer drug to become available

Breast cancer sufferers are to receive a new type of drug treatment after new aromatase inhibitors were given official approval for use.

The new drugs are designed to treat early-stage breast cancer, and will be prescribed to post-menopausal women only.

The inhibitors work by targeting hormones responsible for the growth and recurrence of cancer tumours, making it an ideal drug to use post surgery.

It is expected that ruling by the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) will mean that the class of drugs will eventually take over from the current breast cancer drug of choice, tamoxifen.
