Post subject: If you couldn't afford...
If you couldn't afford to buy something new for your parents for Christmas - what would you do? Would you just wish them a merry christmas or would you make them a card?

The days when I had an empty wallet I used to make all of my gifts. Of course the materials cost something, but the end product is worth more if you look at replacement cost.
See my hobby growing up was woodworking and I used to cut out the plaques that people use for tole painting, so I used to make a lot of mirrors, plant stands and quilt racks for gifts.
I am not sure what type of skills you have but you may look at doing something similar.

write them a poem and frame it.
paint a picture
get creative and the gift will mean little compared to the effort that was made.

If you can’t come up with anything, then you can look for one on the web. You can print it on a fancy paper and frame it …
Just an idea …

it would be a looking back and looking ahead poem, mixed with funny inside jokes, etc.

Or something pretty like …
Quote:
i am a little church(no great cathedral)
far from the splendor and squalor of hurrying cities
-i do not worry if briefer days grow briefest,
i am not sorry when sun and rain make april
my life is the life of the reaper and the sower;
my prayers are prayers of earth's own clumsily striving
(finding and losing and laughing and crying)children
whose any sadness or joy is my grief or my gladness
around me surges a miracle of unceasing
birth and glory and death and resurrection:
over my sleeping self float flaming symbols
of hope,and i wake to a perfect patience of mountains
i am a little church(far from the frantic
world with its rapture and anguish)at peace with nature
-i do not worry if longer nights grow longest;
i am not sorry when silence becomes singing
winter by spring,i lift my diminutive spire to
merciful Him Whose only now is forever:
standing erect in the deathless truth of His presence
(welcoming humbly His light and proudly His darkness)
Quote:
somewhere i have never travelled,gladly beyond
any experience,your eyes have their silence:
in your most frail gesture are things which enclose me,
or which i cannot touch because they are too near
your slightest look easily will unclose me
though i have closed myself as fingers,
you open always petal by petal myself as Spring opens
(touching skilfully,mysteriously) her first rose
or if your wish be to close me,i and
my life will shut very beautifully, suddenly,
as when the heart of this flower imagines
the snow carefully everywhere descending;
nothing which we are to perceive in this world equals
the power of your intense fragility: whose texture
compels me with the color of its countries,
rendering death and forever with each breathing
(i do not know what it is about you that closes
and opens; only something in me understands
the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses)
nobody,not even the rain, has such small hands
- E. E. Cummings

Whoops, I may have been in the wrong thread or read it wrong.
I would probably send a card.

Yeah - I'm on the card but then again that's why my wife is in charge of coordinating gifts.

Is there anything stopping you doing a few hours work for something to earn just a little cash to buy something? Just an alternative idea...
