Water aerobic activity is great for you because of the less stress on the body and high cardio value, but ultimately everyone needs to exercise THEIR HEART more then anything else. That is cardio (walking, running, bike, etc). The problem is that many people work out, but not at the right heart rate for any sustained period of time. So they sweat and think they are doing something, but their heart rate never gets into the proper levels for wieght loss or cardio benefits. Remember, it does not make a difference if you look like a fitness model and are all ripped - if you die when you are 40 years old. Most people exercise for EGO and how they look, when they should be concerned with their heart rate, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, etc.
And diet, don't get me started. 99% of people work out..and then ruin it all when they eat wrong right after.

I'm going to have to disagree with you. Can you back up your claims about heart rate training? It's simply incorrect to state that because these people weren't at the "proper" heart rates that they weren't doing any good.

A higher intensity produces better results. And your comment about the fitness model who dies at 40, I have to say I didn't quite understand that.

That article says basically what I was saying and virtually everyone agrees upon. You must exercise at the optimal heart rate for your body shape, size and type, to get the most out of your exercise program.

I will say it again, if you go to any gym you see many many people "spinning their wheels" for lack of a better term. sure they are in a gym and working out, but getting very little out of their time in the gym and they could be getting more out of their efforts. Ask any personal trainer that and they will agree. It is frustrating to most people in the health club industry, but it is also what keeps personal trainers in business.

my joke about "Remember, it does not make a difference if you look like a fitness model and are all ripped - if you die when you are 40 years old." is something that is said by many in the industry. If you look like a fitness model, but die young, then what is the point. many people only exercise for ego and not long term health.

Most personal trainers have no idea what they are talking about, just as if you were to ask a doctor what is an ideal exercise routine. The responses one tends to get are quite loopy. Becoming a personal trainer is not difficult. Do you realize how easy it is to get an ACE certification?

The article actually refutes your point, and says it is more efficient to exercise at a higher intensity. If you exercise at a higher intensity, you will burn more fat. The whole business of optimal heart rate is a scam.
