Fast food products are generally believed that they are hazardous to your health. Tobacco tax and alcohol tax are implemented arguably because they are hazardous to your health. Should we have fast food tax?

Yeah, why not? Since fast food is pretty cheap, I think it would be easy enough to add on some kind of tax. If it means that some people buy less fast food, then that's got to be a good thing really.

Detroit is looking into this. They may have implemented this already. Detroit is one of the top 3 fattest cities in American today. We'll see what happens. If they rank lower in the coming years, then all other cities may want to consider doing the same.

I don't think they have anything to lose. If I was Mayor of Detroit (or whoever the person that makes the decision is), I would be giving it serious consideration. Good luck to them...

Burger, fries and fast-food tax to go?

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - An additional tax on fast-food may be a distasteful idea for whopper-lovers but at least one major city in the Midwest is seriously considering such a proposal.

In an effort to curb a looming $300 million budget deficit, Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick last month floated what he called a "different budget than has ever been presented to our city council."

The budget includes a proposed 2 percent tax that would be levied only on sales at fast-food restaurants, among other items that would generate additional revenue for the city.

So is he doing it to sort out his finances, rather than for health reasons?

I believe that is one of reasons. Cynics always say "Oh, he's doing it for the money." I happened to listen to his interview, and he sounded like he has genuine interest in this to advocate healthier life style.
